In 2001, Columbia released a three CD set, The Complete In a Silent Way Sessions by Miles Davis.

For this collection of recordings documents an important turning point in the history of jazz. To the innovative trumpeter it was literally the demarcation line between his acoustic, straight jazz up to that time and the electric jazz-rock fusion he has played almost exclusively to the time of his death in 1991.

The tracks represent his entire recorded output in chronological order from September, 1968 until February, 1969. It was during a period where Miles was on a major creative roll. He had seen his former protege' Cannonball Adderley become increasingly popular during the sixties when he blended R&B into his jazz. Miles wanted to reach a larger audience, too, but instead of looking to Ray Charles for inspiration, he used the music of Jimi Hendrix and Sly Stone for his own template.

Miles Davis - The Complete Bitches Brew Sessions (1970)

When Miles Davis released Bitches Brew in April 1970, he set the music world on its ear. No one had heard anything quite like this before. The music went far beyond all the limits of jazz and rock, and created a new genre--fusion. The six tracks that made it to the original double album (which in itself was a rarity for a jazz artist) were recorded over three days in August 1969, and then assembled from various takes in the studio. The rest of the material included here features largely the same musicians, but in different sessions over the next 6 months.

In addition to the six original selections, The Complete Bitches Brew Sessions also features nine unreleased tracks, alternate takes, and tracks from previously released LPs. Of the unreleased tracks, "Corrado," "Recollection," and the alternate version of "The Little Blue Frog" are highlights. Not all of the new material stands up to repeated listens, however. Unless you're a fan of repetitive Indian music, stay clear of record three. These tracks never seem to get off the ground. Aside from that, you won't be disappointed in the extra tunes. And like the rest of the box, it sounds great.

The Complete Jack Johnson Sessions represent a stunning crossroads where boxing, the Black Power movement, the development of rock music as an expression of vast changes in American society, the electronic amplification of jazz, and Miles Davis all came together.

The Complete Jack Johnson Sessions were recorded in April 1970 by Miles Davis, and released in September 2003. These sessions formed the basis for the 1970 album A Tribute to Jack Johnson. They were recorded as the soundtrack for a documentary by the same name about the heavyweight world champion boxer Jack Johnson.

Miles Davis - The Complete Cellar Door Sessions (1970)

This six-CD set features trumpeter Miles Davis with his early fusion band, marking the significant change that he was to bring about in jazz. Recorded from December 16-19, 1970, Davis' music retained the comfortable swing and fiery emotion that he had espoused in earlier years, but added a dynamic force that signaled progress in the entertainment industry.

Taking advantage of the technological developments available to him, he experimented with the sonic powers of electric piano, electric bass, and electric guitar, without yet moving into the realm of synthesizers. Thus, this session comes between two vastly different aspects of the trumpeter's signature sound: after his acoustic, straightahead bop legacy and before his heavily synthesized jazz/rock fling. The Cellar Door sessions provided the original source material for Live/Evil (Columbia, 1972), but they're presented in their entirety here.

Miles Davis - The Complete On The Corner Sessions (1972-1975)

On the Corner was released in October 1972, followed by Big Fun and Get Up With It, both in 1974. All of these records contained (at least partially) music recorded during sessions in 1972-75, the period represented on Columbia Legacy's latest extravagant box-set treatment for Davis, The Complete On the Corner Sessions. Over six discs, we get every track put to tape during the period by Davis' revolving cast of players (in addition to the core of his touring band, luminous Davis alums like Chick Corea, Jack DeJohnette, John McLaughlin, Herbie Hancock, Don Alias, and Bennie Maupin drop by), and though I don't anticipate many all-night OtC listening parties in the near future, it's arguably the greatest collection of Davis' post-Bitches Brew studio music in one set. The thing is, this is thick, sticky stuff; 20-minute jams like "Ife" or the unedited take of "On the Corner" are amazingly gripping despite their lengths, but process a few in a row, and you risk experiencing dizzy spells. In retrospect, maybe it's not surprising that Davis retired in 1975, resurfacing half a decade later playing music that was a lot more easily digestible. Funky Skunk, a jazz-funk band from France

I would like to finish this first funky page of Groovy Dude LP's presenting you an awesome french jazz-funk band, Funky Skunk.


The story takes place in Amiens. A jazz funk master, having fled the U.S., is assassinated by his rival. Splinter, who learned to play the Rhodes by observing him, takes refuge in the sewers. There he takes in 4 baby musicians who had fallen there by accident. Exposed to a radioactive and strangely funky substance, the musicians mutate and change into skunks.

Splinter teaches each one to master an instrument in the hope of creating an odoriferous jazz-funk combo. He teaches Davidello the art of the Rhodes, sharp as a razor blade; to Kennyello, mastery of the bass thumping like a billyclub; to Raphaelo the technique of the alto and soprano saxophone, and the bass clarinette, notes shining like ninja stars; and to Joslinello the secrets of the drum set, percussive like a submachine gun.

In this way the group Funky Skunk was born, the only common point between Herbie Hancock and The Monty Pythons..their war cry: "You're a rotten egg!"

With Wayne Henderson of Crusaders fame handling the production, Caldera showed a great deal of promise on its self-titled 1976 debut album. The Latin jazz-fusion unit isn't afraid to take chances on such imaginative pieces as Jorge Strunz's "El Juguete" and Eduardo del Barrio's "Exaltation" -- chances that pay off in a major way. Though one can tell that Caldera's members were well aware of such explorers as Return to Forever, Weather Report, and the Mahavishnu Orchestra, it's also clear that they were major Earth, Wind & Fire fans and had absorbed a wide variety of Latin music. Strunz and del Barrio were hardly the only fusionists who incorporated Latin rhythms in the 1970s -- Chick Corea, George Duke, Wayne Shorter, Al DiMeola, and Joe Zawinul were all well aware of the musical innovations of Latinos, but Caldera was unique in the sense that the band represented a real melting pot of Latinos bringing different ideas to the table. Grover Washington, Jr always put on exciting shows, and this performance from the Bijou Cafe in Philadelphia is a good example of his repertoire in 1977. It does not reach the heights of his best studio recordings or concerts, but there are some fine moments. Utilizing his octet of the time (with violinist John Blake, keyboardist James Simmons, and flutist Leslie Burrs), this CD (a straight reissue of the original LP) mostly features Washington playing lesser-known tunes that would not stay in his repertoire for long (other than a medley that includes "Mr. Magic"), but Washington (heard on tenor, alto, and soprano) consistently uplifts the material. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

East Bay Rhythm - A Little Love Will Help (1976-80)

East Bay Rhythm's name may be a bit obscure to those not from the Bay area, but its key members -- James Levy, Paul Jackson, and Bill Summers -- were members of Herbie Hancock's legendary Headhunters band. The other main member, Butch Haynes, was a member of the fabled Afro-Jazz Quintet. These tracks were cut live and edited minimally. They feature Jackson on bass, Levy on trap kit, with Haynes and Summers on percussion along with a bevy of guests that include Jorge Santana (of Malo) and Carl Lockett, on guitar, Robert Washington and Fall on vocals, and bassist Freddie Washington on bass among others. Recorded between 1976 and 1980 at the Fantasy Studios in Berkeley, none of the eleven cuts collected here has been released in any form before. What is remarkable about East Bay Rhythm's sound is how rooted it is in various idioms: The deep funk of the middle 1970s, gospel a la James Cleveland, the roots of disco, and of course the wild yet precise, Afro-Cuban son rhythms that propel virtually everything here. What is also remarkable is to hear hand percussion in such overdriven funk numbers as "Accept Me," with its hypnotic guitar lines and slipping bass groove, the hand drums run amok on the inside of the mix. As the vocals fade form the center channel, Levy's syncopation careens under the beat as the hand percussionists ride herd over it. That this track is followed by the glorious instrumental, pre-disco anthem "Party Down," is such a plus here: Afro-Caribbean percussion drives not only the beats but the melody into turning on itself no less than three times before the bridge! The groove feels easy but is complex and stretchable with the cross-cross of rhythmic lines trading space in the center of the tune. Of course, this is just a sampling of what is available here over nearly an hours worth of music. This is the place where Tower of Power, Sly Stone, Roy Ayers funky material, and gospel music meet in a deep soul potboiler. ~ Thom Jurek, All Music Guide

Patrice Rushen - 2 LP's from 1974 & 1975

Dusty Groove :
The first 2 albums as a leader from keyboardist Patrice Rushen! Prelusion is a great set from Patrice -- very different than her later R&B work from the 80s! The record's her first, and at the time, Patrice was much more of a jazz artist -- working here with a cool west coast set of players (Joe Henderson on tenor, Hadley Caliman on alto and soprano, and Oscar Brashear on trumpet), playing a range of keyboards, from acoustic and electric piano, to ARP, and clavinet. The tracks are long, and have a wonderfully composed soul jazz vibe -- feeling a heck of a lot like work on labels like Strata East, deeply dipping into a soulful bag that's solid and real, with no fakery or tricks to make the mood happen. Includes "Traverse", "Shortie's Portion", "7/73", and "Haw Right Now". Before The Dawn has Patrice working in a groove that's almost like that of Herbie Hancock at the time -- using lots of electric piano, clavinet, and synth to craft some mighty fine jazz funk grooves. The group's a monster assemblage of Fantasy jazz players like Hubert Laws, Lee Ritenour, Hadley Caliman, and Harvey Mason -- and the session crackles with a tight edge that you'll never find in any of Patrice's later work. Tracks are long, with lots of great spacey grooves, and titles include "Razzia", "Before The Dawn", "Kickin Back", and "Jubilation". Note: CD omits the track "Puttered Bopcorn" from Prelusion -- due to space restrictions.
